Samsung finally catches up to Motorola in the Z Flip lineup with the Galaxy clamshell's cover display, which eliminates the notch and covers the entire top half. Despite the fact that the change on the inside is easier to miss, a new bendy display also follows. The Z Flip6's cover screen had a diagonal of 3.4 inches, so its current size is 4.1 inches. It's got more pixels too (948x1048px) and maximum refresh rate is 120Hz, compared to the ancient-sounding 60Hz of the Flip6's outer panel.

The diagonal has also grown inside. The 6.9-inch foldable panel is in a slightly shorter aspect ratio (21:9, 1,080x2,560px) compared to the Z Flip6's setup (22:9, 1,080x2,640px) and the net result is a not insignificant increase in display area by about 10%. Sure enough, this panel supports 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ (but no Dolby Vision).

We measured a little under 1,500nits on the internal display of Galaxy Z Flip7 with the Adaptive brightness toggle enabled. With the Extra brightness setting on, we received 745nits (447nits otherwise) when we turned it off. Overall, there is nothing to complain about given the same results as last year. The cover display more or less matches the main one in terms of brightness, with the exception of the missing Extra brightness - it's 447nits in manual operation with a boost to 1,400nits in Adaptive behavior.

As is typical, there is not much control over the refresh rate other than the two fundamental modes, Adaptive and Standard, which effectively set ceilings of 120Hz and 60Hz. Depending on content, activity, brightness level, and other factors, the phone's adaptive refresh rate will be set to the lowest possible level in either mode.
This time around, the cover screen behaves the same way as before, when it worked at a fixed 60Hz refresh rate. Regardless of mode, the phone will adjust to match video frame rates (24, 30, 48, and 60Hz). Browsers and social media apps idle at 60Hz, when there's moving content, but they will get 120Hz for scrolling.
The phone reports "--," which to us sounds like 1 Hz, when the picture is still. As long as the Flip is set to Adaptive mode, you can play games at a high frame rate (though the game itself cannot go faster than 60 frames per second). The Z Flip7, like most Galaxies, supports HDR10 and HDR10+, but not Dolby Vision. Netflix provided us with HDR10 streams, which enabled FullHD playback thanks to Widevine L1 compliance. YouTube also served HDR content.

We discovered that the in-house Gallery app, Google Photos, Chrome, and the Samsung Internet browser all support Google's Ultra HDR photo standard for metadata-based brightness enhancement of images in gallery apps or browsers (a year ago, only the Samsung Internet browser worked on the Flip6).

The Z Flip7 has a slightly larger battery, which is always a good thing, especially for a foldable where battery life isn't usually a top priority. The 4,300mAh typical capacity is practically the same as on the much larger Z Fold7 (4,400mAh), which doesn't really look right if you're after the book-style foldable, but should certainly make you feel better about the Z Flip7.

In our tests, the Z Flip7 outperformed the Z Flip6 in both video playback and web browsing runtimes by three hours, which isn't bad at all. There was a slight decrease in call time and gaming, but neither was significant. Taking everything into account, the Z Flip7 had an Active Use Score of 11:52 hours.
