Honor 400 Pro Camera and Video Quality

 The Honor 400 has a pretty versatile and promising camera setup, at least on paper.  On the back is a 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP3 snapper with OIS and plenty of resolution to pull off some good zoom shots.  It is accompanied by a 12MP autofocusing ultrawide, which should be able to double as a macro camera.

Sadly, when it came to revealing its camera hardware, the Honor 400 was not particularly cooperative. We are only certain that the main camera is based on the Samsung ISOCELL HP3 sensor.  It has a 1/1.4" size and 0.56 µm individual pixels.

The 12MP ultrawide camera is 112-degree wide and sits behind an f/2.2 lens, which is about the extent of the information we have on it.  Additionally, it has autofocus. We don't know what particular sensor the 50MP selfie camera uses either, but as far as we know, it has 0.64 µm individual pixels, which is fairly common.

There is nothing particularly noteworthy about the camera UI of the Honor 400.  Everything is laid out logically and makes sense.  You get a powerful Pro mode with plenty of settings, which can be engaged on any of the phone's cameras.

The Honor 400's main camera has a resolution of 12.5 megapixels and produces some images of excellent quality overall. The processing is nice an natural without noticeable oversharpening.  The colors also come through well and have a good dynamic range.

At 2x digital zoom, photos look very similar in overall quality to the regular 1x ones, which is great to see.  In fact, they appear to be much better quality than the ones out of the Honor 400 Pro, which we reviewed recently.

The Honor 400 handles people and portraits quite well.  There are quick toggles in the camera UI for portrait shots at 1x, 1.5x, 3x and 4x zoom.  Subject detection and separation are nearly perfect, and the quality of the background blur is solid.

There is nothing to complain about regarding the ultrawide shots' quality. The detail is decent but not great, and there is heavy processing going on.  Dynamic range and contrast are merely alright.  At least the colors are well-matched to the main camera.  The Honor 400 Pro's ultrawide camera is much better.

As mentioned, thanks to its autofocus, the ultrawide camera has an extra trick up its sleeve - macro shots.  The ultrawide can focus surprisingly close to the subject and capture some pretty impressive close-ups.  The Super Macro UI of Honor includes toggles for 0.6x, 1x, and 2x. All of these zoom levels are done with the ultrawide camera.

As expected, the 50MP selfie camera captures some excellent stills.  There is great detail, and the skin texture looks nice and natural.  Skin tones follow the same pattern. It is unfortunate that there is no autofocus, but the focal plane is wide and quite forgiving. The main camera captures quite decent low-light shots.  The detail is good, and there is very little noise on surfaces.  The dynamic range is nice and wide, with well-developed shadows and highlights.  Light sources are well-contained.  Overall - a good showing.

The ultrawide camera photos is not going to win any contests in low-light conditions.  Still, the general image properties like contrast, colors and dynamic range (highlight retention in particular) are quite okay.  From up close, however, it's evident that the sharpness is not stellar, and you can see a lot of noise and something that looks like compression artifacts.

 The Honor 400 Pro features a 6.7-inch OLED screen with 1,280 x 2,800 pixels resolution or 460ppi density.  The display has a color depth of 10 bits, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, HDR Vivid, and HDR10 certifications for YouTube, Prime, and Netflix. Honor advertises this display for its 5,000nits of peak brightness, 1.5nits minimum brightness, DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, color correction during sunlight brightness boost, natural tone (color temperature correction), 3840Hz PWM dimming, and some good reduction in eye fatigue via Honor Eye Care mode.

We captured exactly 1.5nits of minimal brightness, 616nits of maximum manual and 1,481nits of maximum automatic brightness.  Reducing the white patch down to 30% and less, yields more than 3,000nits of brightness.

Oddly both High and Standards are fixed at 120Hz and 60Hz, respectively.  Usually, those still drop the refresh rate to a lower level for idle screen, but not on this Honor. Overall, the Honor 400 Pro provides an adequate battery life for the given hardware and it scored very well across all tests. The Honor 400 Pro supports up to 100W fast wired and up to 50W fast wireless charging.  It can also reverse wired and wireless charged other devices.

Nubia Z70S Ultra Camera Quality

 nubias have been iterating on the concept of a 35mm main camera and the Z70S Ultra is another step on that path, now with a larger sensor than what the Z70 Ultra had.  The underdisplay camera, another staple of the lineup, has also received a minor hardware upgrade. On the back, the telephoto and ultrawide remain unchanged.

The new main camera employs an OmniVision OV50H sensor - it has a 50MP resolution and a 1/1.3" optical format - up from the 1/1.56" imager they used before and more or less on par with what the vivo X200 Ultra has on its own 35mm camera.  The nubia has lost the variable aperture in the process, though we don't really see anyone missing that.

The hardware of the telephoto and ultrawide remain unchanged, and on paper, it appears to be pretty decent hardware. What's also been left the same is the weird software implementation where the viewfinder defaults to 85mm and 18mm for those two camera, while their native focal lengths are 70mm and 13mm, so it takes some cycling through the zoom levels (85-140-70 and 18-24-13) to get to those - it's annoying.

During the day, the new main camera takes pretty good pictures. It has foliage that is a little too digitally rendered, but it isn't too bad, and noise is nonexistent and detail is generally excellent. White balance is mostly accurate and colors have plenty of pop, though reds can be a little off on occasion.The dynamic range is superb.

The nubia's software peculiarities continue into taking pictures of people.  In the regular Photo mode, the phone will recognize when you have a human subject and controls for blur, simulated lighting, and beautification will pop up, in addition to a suggestion to go into the dedicated Portrait mode.

In backlit situations, Portrait mode (with or without bokeh) will have better dynamic range than Photo mode, so that might be something to think about. The large sensor and 35mm lens will team up to make pretty decent subject separation on their own without simulated blur, though the made up bokeh is quite conservative by default and very convincing, so we wouldn't necessarily avoid it.

You'd want to switch to the telephoto camera if you're going beyond 35mm and its native 70mm focal length will give you great results.  Again, you'll need to go through some hoops to get to 70mm, but the effort will be rewarded with sharp and detailed 16MP shots.

 Shifting gears to the ultrawide camera, the native 13mm focal length will get you extreme coverage and decent detail overall.  WE'd say dynamic range has been improved a little compared to the Z70 Ultra, and colors are quite pleasing too.

The subpar selfies are the other concession you'll have to make. Not having a punch hole in the display means less detail in your selfies, but we'll be quick to point out that there's a somewhat significant improvement over the Z70 Ultra.  It's almost approaching a point where these will be good enough not to be complained about.

The ultrawide does reasonably well at night at its native focal length.  In scenes with better lighting, the level of detail is decent to good. Nubia Z70S Ultra Display and Battery Life

 With the X70S Ultra, nubia continues to be one of the few makers to offer an underdisplay selfie camera, which let's you have a display without any visible cutouts - in most applications, at least.  It's seemingly the same panel as the one on the Z70 Ultra before it, which is no bad thing.

The display has a diagonal of 6.85 inches, a pixel density of 430 ppi, a resolution of 2,688 x 1,216 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 19.9:9. The nubia, in contrast to the majority of other smartphones, has a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz, with an additional 24 Hz available for games that are compatible. In our brightness testing, we measured just under 1,400nits in auto mode and a little over 600nits when you set it manually with the slider - virtually the same numbers as on the Z70 Ultra.  Neither number is anything special, but neither is a cause for concern either.

The Z70S Ultra has a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, but gaming is the only use for that peak value. In our testing, the in-house utility reported frame rates of up to 144 frames per second in both 3D and arcade games. As a result, you can anticipate mostly trouble-free high frame rates gaming, thanks, no small part, to the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Aside from that, you have fixed refresh rates of 60, 90, and 120 Hz, and the display settings let you basically set hard limits on each of those values. Regardless of the mode, the phone will slow down to 60Hz when it is idle. The Z70S Ultra supports HDR10, but it lacks HDR10+ or Dolby Vision compliance.  It's Widevine L1-certified and it should support high-res video playback of DRM-protected content - we checked and Netflix did allow FullHD playback, which wasn't our experience on the Z70 Ultra, so you can count that as an improvement.

Netflix did not, however, provide HDR to us. The phone (kind of) supports the Android Ultra HDR standard for displaying HDR photos with enhanced tone mapping and a brightness boost for highlights.  It works in both Chrome (which was buggy on the previous model, but here it's all good) and Google Photos.

The thing is, though, that the phone's own images don't appear to support the standard, and the boost only shows up in compatible photos from other sources.

The Z70S Ultra has gotten a 600mAh battery capacity upgrade, with the new model's 6,600mAh number being higher than most.  Like before, it's a silicon-carbon battery as well. However, the new model arrived at those nearly 13 hours later than the Z70 Ultra did for a variety of reasons. We observed a slight improvement in video playback and a more significant increase in the amount of time required to make a voice call; however, web browsing and gaming performed less well. The Z70S Ultra has its fair share of battery protection features.  The Charge separation feature allows the phone to draw only enough power from the adapter to meet its current requirements without draining the battery, preventing excessive heat buildup when gaming, for instance. The same feature can be used to sort of make sure that the phone's battery doesn't charge more than a certain percentage, which could be good for the cell phone's health in the long run.

Nubia Z70S Ultra Phone Design

 The Z70S Ultra is the new Z-series nubia because it's been six months since the last one. In addition to the company's signature 35mm lens, this new camera features a larger sensor, additional battery capacity, and yet another fresh redesign. For this latest edition, the nubia gets a 1/1.3" sensor for its main camera - the one with the 35mm lens.

That is comparable to the vivo X200 Ultra in some ways, and it speaks volumes about the Z70S Ultra's potential, at least in theory. The previous generation had a smaller sensor (1/1.56"), but also an f/1.6-f/4.0 variable aperture lens.

The aperture is now fixed at f/1.7 on this S model.  The ultrawide and telephoto lenses have not changed, but the selfie camera below the display is now slightly better at capturing light. Our review unit of the nubia Z70S Ultra arrived without a charger, a reality that customers in the EU should be familiar with by now.  A cable in the usual red color was included. Also included is a clear snap-on protective case, with particularly tacky shiny edges.

 The nubia Z smartphones have had the design part largely dialed in for a few generations now, iterating on the same concept with minor adjustments in camera placement, materials, and color.  We are not implying that it is a bad thing; rather, we are stating that it is a welcome combination of personality and continuity. Sure enough, the Z70S Ultra changes things up on the back compared to the Z70 Ultra (non-S).

From a distance, the rear panel appears to be typical faux leather, but if you poke it with a knife, it doesn't really scratch. When you look closer, you start to see reflections, which indicate that the panel is still glass even though it was etched and finished to look like leather. Which is good, because we were just about to point out that it's not really soft to the touch like you'd expect from leather.  But since it's glass, we'd praise it for how not like glass it feels - it offers a lot of grip and it doesn't pick up fingerprints, so not a whole lot of downsides to it.

The elimination of the variable aperture mechanism may have evened things out, as the larger main camera sensor has not resulted in a noticeable increase. The other cameras have been left unchanged, so there has been no rearrangement like the one we got from the Z60 Ultra to the Z70 Ultra.

 In a similar vein, the Z70S Ultra's physical controls have not changed, and they remain abundant. In addition to the usual power button and volume rocker there's a two-stage shutter release button on the right, while the left side holds a slider that can be used to launch the camera (or flashlight, or gaming utility).

 The fingerprint reader also remains where it was - and that's pretty much right where it should be in terms of height, so your fingers fall naturally on it.  It's an optical model that opens easily in most situations, but if your hands are frequently wet, you probably prefer an ultrasonic model. On the other hand, the flat rectangular display appears to be made for glass screen protectors, so this optical variety will work well with them. One of the lineup's most striking features is, well, the absence of a camera punch hole - the display appears to be one solid OLED rectangle.

Naturally, there is a selfie camera hidden beneath the display, which has pixels that alternate with those of the panel and is largely unnoticeable when the display is illuminated. The slim uniform bezels are also a welcome sight.

 Similar to the Z70 Ultra, the second-generation Longxi Glass safeguards the display. The frame of the handset, meanwhile, is aluminum and has a fine satin finish - it's more slippery than the back, that's for sure.  The phone is still protected by IP68 and IP69, so it should survive being submerged in water and being sprayed with high-temperature water jets.
